Invisible Illness: Depression [Kickstarter]

A while back, I stumbled upon a project under the name of Invisible Illness. This year they are tackling the topic of Depression. I found the project quite late, giving me only two weeks to come up with a piece, do the drawing and then paint everything. Taking into consideration the drying time of oils.. yeah not that much time. But it felt important, so I went to work.

I first worked on the drawing. With this piece I wanted to explore the feeling of being lost, not knowing where to go and the fear that comes with that. The deep dark pool does that for me in combination with the fog. After this, I started with oil painting.

The piece was a struggle. It was the time constraint and therefore sometimes painting on layers that were not fully dry. And some technical errors that came out of the pressure. But all in all, I’m happy I made the piece and finished it. I feel that depression is becoming more common in our society and that it is hard to talk about or to be heard, especially for young people. By participating in this project I hope to help raise awareness for these issues.

An anthology is a collection of works by different authors gathered into one book. The book will be a B5, so 170 x 240 millimetres, or 6.7 x 9.4 inches in size. We managed to collect original works from more than 30 artists from around the world to share some of their experiences with depression. We have over 70 pages of content that consist of comics, illustrations and creative writing that depict how depression looks and feels to try and better explain this invisible illness. Would you like to help raise awareness and support the artist that made this project possible, be sure to check out the Kickstarter!
